Searching for Goshawks

(2025) Directed by Matthew Langley

Follow a father and son as they search for the illusive Goshawk in Berlin. Through a journey of understanding they encounter topics that have been avoided until this point, from relationships and parenthood to illness and death.

This observational documentary follows a father and son as they search for the elusive goshawk in Berlin. The Goshawk is a rare bird of prey and incredibly hard to spot across Europe, however can be found in the parks, graveyards and wooded spaces of the city. Having recently left his home in the UK to move to Berlin, the filmmaker uses this search to reconnect with his father, who is entering the twilight years of his life. Birdwatching was an activity that brought the two together during the filmmaker’s difficult childhood, defined by his parents’ divorce and his father’s new family. The film features a search for understanding as they discuss topics that have been avoided until this point, ranging from relationships and parenthood, to addiction, illness and death.
